Is this Your Intuition? Accepting a Job

Here’s what Vickie Champion talks about in this video…

INTRODUCTION

Hi! I’m Vickie Champion. I am a business and life coach who helps people listen to their “intuition.”

This is one of the videos in a series called “Is this your Intuition?” One of my assistants will describe a common scenario and then ask you if the person used their intuition or not? Then I’ll tell you my answer and explain “why” I came to that conclusion.

A COMMON SCENARIO-
ACCEPTING A JOB

Jake went on a job interview. The job sounded like something he was qualified for and could easily do well. The pay and benefits were good.
His potential boss seemed to be a nice guy. There seemed to be plenty of room to grow. For some reason Jake had a hard time believing everything his boss was telling him. That was unusual for Jake. He has a tendency to trust almost everyone.

Every time he thought about working there, his chest started feeling heavy and tight. He decided to turn the job down even if they offered it to him. Was Jake using his intuition?

VICKIE’S ANSWER AND EXPLANATION
Absolutely.
Here’s why…

1 It’s not what people say that’s important. It’s your feelings about it, especially if it’s unusual for you. Using your intuition or gut instincts is the ability to focus beyond what’s being said to what’s not being said.

2 Our bodies can often tell us little clues. Heavy and tight feelings is your intuition saying NO.

A COMMON SCENARIO-
MAKING A CONNECTION AT A NETWORKING EVENT

At a business networking event, a man approaches Jan and starts telling her about his product. As he’s talking, Jan notices she’s having a hard time staying focused on what he’s saying. Her mind keeps drifting away, “I wonder what we are going to have for dinner?” and “What do I need to do when I get back to the office?”  The man closes his conversation by asking Jan if he can meet with her and demonstrate his product. Jan thinks for a moment and because he seems nice and might be a potential client, she says yes. Was Jan using her intuition or gut instincts?

VICKIE’S ANSWER AND EXPLANATION
Probably not.
Here’s why…

1 When our thoughts drift away no matter how hard we try to focus, our intuition is hinting that this is a person we will have a difficult time making a connection with.

2 Before making the appointment, ask yourself “why.” Are you excited about seeing the product or getting to know him better? Or do you only want to have an opportunity to sell him your product or get him to give you names of people who would. Being EXCITED is your intuition’s way of saying YES.

Benefits of Using Making a Difference to Motivate!

To me, this is the most evolved of the three methods of motivating.  Not only does it inspire and propel us into action, but it also helps others. This method is the desire to get better and better at something that really matters.

Benefits of Using Making a Difference to Motivate…

We ..

1 Are motivated by how we feel when working on projects. The fun is in mastering the challenge of a given problem.

2 Are motivated by experimenting with possibilities and devising solutions.

3 Like to be recognized for our accomplishments instead of requiring costly rewards.

4 Don’t need someone to micromanage us, making sure we reach our goals.

Using fear and the desire to prosper may have their place as methods of motivating employees or ourselves.  But making a difference can encourage feel-good productivity because it rewards the soul.

Ineffective Way to do an Affirmation

I gave this affirmation to an Orange County, Calif. life coaching client of mine:  “Above all else, I want to be happy.” At her next coaching session she blurted out “Your affirmation isn’t working. I don’t feel any better.” I asked her how she was doing the affirmation. She said she was using Twitter. Several times a day, she would paste and cut the affirmation into a new tweet.

There’s the answer. When we paste and cut words, we put our minds on auto-pilot. In order to reap the positive benefits of affirmations we need to actually think about them. The more frequently we repeat our affirmations through writing or verbally –and think about them as we do this — the quicker and more amazing the results.

When to Use the Desire to Prosper to Motivate!

Up until 2008, most individuals and companies have used the desire to prosper as their main method of motivation. We were in an era where most people had their basic needs of food and shelter met and were focusing on becoming wealthy or very profitable.

When to Use the Desire to Prosper to Motivate…

1 When people are not afraid and focused on survival but are ready to thrive.

2 When someone is easily motivated by dangling carrots—getting rewards for certain outcomes.

Problems with Using the Desire to Prosper to Motivate…

1 After a certain income level, which is subjective for each individual, it gets extremely hard to motivate most people with more rewards.  For example, if someone is making $200,000 a year and has and does everything they desire, they are less likely to work harder for more money.

2 Rewards narrow our focus. People will pursue the reward, but fail to see the big picture or solve problems. An example is when you are focused on making increasing amounts of money but don’t realize your overspending addiction.

3 It creates short-term outcomes and disregards long-term effects. An example of that is BP cutting corners to get the oil well completed on time.

4 Goals imposed by others (sales targets, quarterly returns, standardized test scores) can have dangerous side effects. People will often choose the quickest route there, even if it means taking the low road. (Cheating, steroids, moving the numbers.)

5 People who are motivated by profiting, grow more expensive as time passes. An example of that are the banks handing out outrageous bonuses to employees.

As you can see, motivating by the desire to prosper can be a slippery slide. Too many dangling carrots can easily get us in trouble and cost us more in the long run.
